Burka and Engle was formed in 1991 by Sharon Burka and Tom Engle. From the outset, we decided to accept only cases pending in the Criminal Division of D.C. Superior Court. In over 30 years of practice, we have handled hundreds of cases, from first degree murder to the most petty offense.
We also have a strong appellate practice, having argued dozens of cases in the D.C Court of Appeals. On our appellate page, you may read published opinions in our cases.
We understand that the practice of law is a privilege and seek to "give back" to the bar. Toward that end we maintain the CJA Attorney Directory, used by judges, clerks, USAO, CSOSA and others.
We also provide a service whereby anyone may receive the lockup list each day, delivered via email attachment, the instant it is released by the court. Alternatively, the most recent list is available via the link to the list.
We have also created a free billing program that permits CJA attorneys to enter their time offline, then upload it to the court's Web Voucher System.
